Carrier Ignitor Constant Clicking

We have a 30 year old gas furnace that makes a constant clicking sound when in use. It still functions well and wanted to know if this is something I could fix. The clicking seems to be the ignitor not wanting to stop after the burners are lit, does anyone have any tips on how to fix? Thanks!

At 30 years old? Give it the respect of a good burial, it has served you well. If you are guessing at the age and it is actually a little newer and perhaps a high efficiency model then pull out the circulator blower and crawl inside with a flashlight and inspect the recoup coil from the bottom. Pay close attention to the rear area. If you see any corrosion or rust, look closer and make sure there are no holes or cracks. If there are, you need a new furnace. If it is not a high efficiency furnace, you can see the heat exchanger the same way. If it all looks good, tell the tech. you need a new warp switch.

Thank you for the quick reply. The model is a 1978 Carrier "Super Efficiency" 58SE 125BTU (not sure of AFUE) and do plan to replace but hoping prices will drop in 2009. Recent quote is 30% higher than in 2005.

I will take your advice and inspect before calling for repair.

Call a few places and ask about rebates and credits. In some areas they can add up to a pretty good amount. Most manufacturers offer them in the fall and early winter and your gas company or local energy group may also kick in.
