Honeywell Zone Panel problem

We have a multi zone system that has 3 thermostats feeding it. The Honeywell emm-3 seems to short out or has a loose connection on the transformer connection. Every so often we have to go down and slightly push or wiggle the wires to get the panel to come to life.
My questions are these:
1. For the immediate time, can I bypass this panel and just re-establish the primary thermostat connection to the furnace directly? I'm assuming this was the original design before the previous owners added the zone and damper system. Although the zoning won't work, I can at least get heat to the main floor.

2. How hard is it to change these panels? Seems if I could buy a new Honeywell emm-3 panel I could do a simple switch over to the new panel.

That is a common problem with the emm-3. Label and disconnect all wires and remove the board from the case. To do this you must squeeze the standoffs with pliers for them to release. Take the board to an electronics shop and have them resolder the transformer connection or do it yourself if you are able. Some emm-3s had screws mounting the board.
