Symptoms of a bad thermostat
Ambient indoor air temp ranges between 71F-73F but thermostat reading displayed is constant 78F. I don't notice furnace cycling excessively, appears running normally. The furnace is a Carrier model 58STA controlled by Carrier thermostat model TSTATCCSA01 programmable.

Where are you getting you 72-73 readings, if you are reading this at the stat with an independent thermometer then the stat, if it is an older mechanical stat, needs to be recalibrated. If it is digital it needs to be replaced.

I am reading the ambient air temp from a thermohygrometer.
The thermostat is of the digital, programmable type. It is 4 yrs old and was builder installed.
