Problem with fan on Dayton gas garage heater

I have a Dayton 3E406 gas heater in my garage. The fan won't come on. I thought it was the fan burned out since some balloons drifted into it and the strings wrapped around the shaft (and also blocked the airflow somewhat). I bought a replacement motor but when I took the old motor out and stuck the wires in an outlet, it runs fine. There are some strange electrical thingys in the wiring box, probably sensors. Could they be the problem?
How do I test them?
Note-- the first time I stuck the wires of the old motor in an outlet it blew the fuse, so i reversed the wires and it ran just fine.
Also, the heat fires up and gets hot, then shuts down, presumably from overheating. Help...
