Putting a wet towel on a radiator

We are looking to increase the humidity level in our little apartment, and it was recommended to me to put a wet towel over our electric radiator. As the radiator heats the wet towel, the moisture evaporates into the air and increases the rooms humidity. We tried it a couple times and it worked, but we're afraid that we're going to burn our apartment down.

Do they make a special, fire-retardant towel for this purpose? Or am I being paranoid?

Electric Radiator

I would not leave anything combustible on a heating appliance. What is the main source of heat in the apartment?

Humidifiers cost as little as $25! Money well spent.
