Pilot light on gas furnace keeps going out

The pilot light on our gas furnace keeps going out on very windy days. It has gone out three times now in two weeks. Is is just a draft or a more serious problem?

Question Pilot light on gas furnace keeps going out

The pilot light on our gas furnace keeps going out on windy days. It has gone out 3 times now in 2 weeks. Is it just a draft or a more serious problem? We've had windy days in previous winters, but this year, it is becoming a real problem.

A variety of things can cause pilot outages, from cracked heat exchangers to just the pilot burner needing cleaning.

Cleaning and inspecting the pilot burner and measuring the thermocouple voltage under load and the voltage at which the gas valve drops out and shuts off the pilot are the right things to start with.

An honest and competent repairman is your best bet for solving the problem.
