Does this need to be fixed?

Disregard the half ass PO duct tape job, what im asking about is the shape of the ducting air intake to the furnace.

edit: the picture would be nice, huh!

Im looking to get a new furnace installed, and the first company suggested redoing the intake as it creates a bottle neck. To me, that looks right, but i know nothing about duct work. Maybe the bottle neck creates a pressure that is needed by the furnace to work efficiently?

What i found odd was that redoing the ducting was optional with the first company (who i will ultimately be going with), and never even mentioned by other companies who gave me quotes.

What are your thoughts?

Ductwork

From the sound of things, I would say yes, fix it. There should not be restrictions in properly sized ductwork.

Now that I see the ductwork, it's not as bad as it sounded. A typical return drop is 10x20 or 10x25. Yours would aprear to be only 8" deep x (?) wide.
