My furnace kicks on and off frequently

About two weeks ago my furnace would not kick on. I could hear it ignite, but then it would not start. I cleaned all around and changed the filter and for about a week it worked great. Now it is acting up again. It turns on and shuts off frequently. Sometimes the temp drops way down and I have to bump up the temp on my thermostat (programmable) to get it to kick on. Any ideas? Thank you.

Start by posting the make and model of the furnace from the rating plate in the furnace burner compartment. Usually you have to remove the sheet metal cover over the burner compartment.

Do you have a multimeter that can measure AC voltage?

With the cover off the furnace, turn the thermostat down until everything shuts off. Then turn the thermostat up to 80 degrees or so and carefully observe the sequence of events that happens as the furnace turns on. You may need to repeat that a few times until you see all the things that happen.

Report back on the things you see and hear happening.
