Turning on oil water heater
Hello,
A stupid question, but I've never actually used an oil water heater before. Bought a house, need to start the water heater. Only switches I can see on it are the on/off and reset. So, I'm assuming after the tank is filled up with oil I switch the water heater on and press reset. Do you have to light a pilot light with an oil furnace? How long should it take before I have hot water?
Thanks.

First off there is no question that is stupid. its something you do not know
If units are oil than there is no pilot light
How long have they been off??
if you turn on the hot water is water comming out???
if not i would not start the unit!!!
when you get oil let it sit for about an hour when you turn the switch on the unit should start if you rain out of oil it must be primed if the unit stays running the smoke pipe will start to get hot very fast
it will take about an hour to get hot water

No idea how long it's been off. The house has been vacant for a year and a half while the owner did renovations. The oil tank is completely empty and I am arranging a delivery. If I turn on the hot water taps water does come out, it's just cold since the heater isn't on.
So, once the oil is delivered, let it sit for an hour, then flip the water heater on, hit reset, and if I check an hour and a half or so after that I should ahve hot water?

How old is the house ?? & oil tank ???& hot water heater ???? how much oil are you getting ? most likley you are going to need a good cleaning. check the oil tank for leaks or wet spots .
