Which furnace do I go for?

I am eligible for a free furnace under a grant.
I will get a Trane XB90 free installed.

I asked whether there were uogrades I could pay for and the installer said there was a XV95 (2 stage 95% efficiency) and a XR95 (one stage, 95% efficiency). He has not yet told me how much the upgrades would cost but the XB90 is free for me.

Is the XV95 and XR95 worth the added money? I will let you know how much more when I know this.

Furnace upgrade

It largely depends upon where you are & your heating bills. If properly sized, the 2 stage will run on low the vast majority of the time & only go into high on really cold days or, if you use a programable thermostat, & it jumps from the setback (unoccupied or night) temp to a higher "occupied" setting.

First floor needs 144K BTU and second floor 134K BTU

Northern suburb of Chicago.

First floor needs 144K BTU and second floor 134K BTU by the heat load calculation.

What is the best brand of furnace for this capacity?

Is 95% worth the extra cost for this heat load?

Is variable speed fan, 2 stage burners worth the extra cost?

In my opinion the two stage burner and variable speed blower are absolutely worth the extra capital cost. With that heat load and living in the Chicago area I would also go for the 95% AFUE model.
