Heat Exchanger

There may or may not be symptoms other than not waking up some morning due to carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have ANY question as to the integrity of the heat exchanger or if it has been more than a couple of years since professional service, call a reputable service company to get it checked out.

In a singlke exchanger older fashion gas furnace, the burner fire may flutter when the blower comes on. This is pretty apparent in multiple burner furnaces that have burner tubes that produce pretty steady uprising flames. It may be hard to tell though, if you have the single burner gun type burner that sends fire shooting back horizonatally, to a deflection plate and it swirls around at that point, and goes up(often out of view).

On newer condensing high efficient furnaces - these also have secondary heat exchangers. Besides the first paragraph also applying here, there also is a secondary heat exchanger, that sits right above the blower in upflow furnaces. If that gets cracked you could lose enough suction in the pressure switch vacuum tube, to shut off the burners. Then a person, besides removing the blower and inspecting, is to rule out other causes for why the pressure switch can no longer stay closed when the ventor (inducer) fan is running.
