Propane furnace makes a loud bang when igniting

I have a GE propane heater that makes a loud bang occasionally when trying to ignite tubes. We have to shut down the thermostat then turn it back up, almost sounds like it is shooting fire out of it, it is quite scary. I cant afford to call a HVAC company, but am terrified that it could blow up. My daughter thinks that when it does that it is a gun going off. Any help would be grateful. Thanks

Without seeing it, the first thing I would do would be to remove and clean the burners. How old is the unit ? What is the make and model # ?

If your not handy etc. propane is nothing to mess around with.
