Installing new blower shaft and bearings

I am installing a new shaft and bearings in my furnace/AC blower and was wondering since the shaft is steel and the bearings are brass should I polish the shaft so there is less friction and is any lube ever used on these things. Thanks a bunch for your input. Have a good one. Geo

Belt drive blower? Man, that's got to be an oldie.

If you have sleeve bearings then absolutely polish the shaft and yes they need to oiled periodically but if you have ball bearings then just clean it up enough to allow insertion into the bearings without undue force. Ball bearings are then locked to the shaft with either setscrews or an eccentric collar. Most ball bearings will be "sealed" and not require any additional lubrication.
