20 year old Carrier Heater turns off before target temperature reached

I have a 20 year old carrier 58GP125 - DA Heating system that is acting strangely. If the house temperature is 65 and I set the thermostat to 68, the heater will turn on for a few minutes and then shut down. After a minute or two, it will turn on again and repeat the cycle until it finally reaches the set temperature.

I has placed a new air filter in the system and it still has the problem.

Please advise! I'm pretty handy and feel with the right information, I could fix this problem.

No Pro...so I don't recognize exactly what your system is. Gas furnace? Heat Pump?

Just a guess..but if it's gas...I'd check to see if the fan is shutting off but the burner is staying on when you say the system "shuts down".

Could be your fan controller....

You need to observe your system more carefully.

Is the gas burner turning on? The fan that circulates the air? What is turning on and off, in what order?

My first guess would be high-limiting. We could get more specific and ask you to check this and that, If I know you will return.
