Is a 2-stage worth the extra money?

I'm looking to upgrade an old Janitrol unit while the government is willing to help me.

I've gotten a couple of quotes and I read that a 2-stage furnace with a variable speed fan will pay for itself in a few years due to lower electricity costs with the variable speed blower. However, depending on brand, the price difference is between $750 and $900 to move to the 2-stage models. I wanted to know if it's likely to be worth the money.

It depends upon several factors but most people find it is worth the extra since the furnace runs on low the vast majority of the time, only going into high on very cold days or if the thermostat is turned up several degrees as with a set back thermostat.
