My dad has a small hot water heater (30 gals.)which he turns off and on every day. He lets it heat for 45 minutes and turns it off. Is this more efficient than leaving it on or not? Thanks

Cool

For about $45 he can by an automatic timer that will do the same thing.
And yes, it is far more efficient to turn a water heater off than leave it on most of the day when you don't need it. An electric water heater is a big energy user.

Check out health sites

A few years back the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL posted a warning that water from a hot water heater, not heated above 135 degrees ,could cause a lot of different bacteria to grow and cause some illnesses. So surf the web, just in case your dad happens to draw that water off for a morning cup of tea.I'm not joking!!!!PDF

Thanks PDF but I know he doesn't do that. He likes his coffee almost boiling when he drinks it and no tea. That is very good info for anyone else who made read this.
