Unhappy

HELLO,

I HAVE A YORK HEAT PUMP , MY PROBLEM IS THIS: WHEN THE HEAT PUMP IS RUNNING IN THE HEAT MODE AND THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 40 DEGREES ( F )IT RUNS FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THEN TURNS OFF PRIOR TO THE THERMOSATAT SETTING BEING SATISFIED, THE AIR HANDLER CONTINUES TO RUN .
IF AT THAT POINT THE HEAT PUMP IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AT THE THERMOSTAT THE HEAT PUMP WILL AGAIN RESTART BUT WILL NOT RUN UNTIL THE THERMOSTAT SETTING IS REACH . MY HEATING CONTRACTOR HAS INVESTIGATED THIS PROBLEM AND CAN NOT FIND A MALFUNCTION . WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ?

How old is your unit??

York units in the late 80's had a board in the outdoor unit. There were three settings if I remember right. These were used to bring on the AUX heat at different out side temps.A thermister in the outdoor controlled it's operation.Don't quote me on this.I believe the temps were set at 37,34 and and 31.By moving that single wire to that certain terminal you could bring on the electrical heat at a higher temp or lower temp...Are you still getting heat from your unit when the temp is below 40?If so the terminal should be switched to the lowest outside ambient temp..If memory serves me that thermister also kept AUX heat, emergency heat from coming on if outside temp was above this setting if the compresor went into a "LOCKED OUT" condition. At that time it would relay a signal to your tstat. The light would come on,indicate such at which time you could switch to AUX heat.PDF.When you turn your tstat off then on the board in your out door unit is going thru a check out,it senses your complete system, decides what you want and cycles the outdoor unit accordingly.PDF

THE UNIT IS EIGHT YEARS OLD . YES, HEAT IS BEING DELIVERED WITH THE TEMP. BELOW 40 DEGREES. THE HEAT STRIPS HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED . I WILL CHECK THE BOARD AS YOU SUGGEST.
THANKS
