payne heater help

payne heater unit, heater will come and stay on for only 3 minutes, then go off for 5, then back on for 3 over and over again

does it actually come on? i mean the burners are lit for 3 minutes or the fan runs for 3 minutes? sounds like the limit switch(witch cuts the gas when it gets too hot) is being cut when it gets too hot. its a brown square that sits above the burners, like 6 inches above. check to see if u have condinuity between the two points when the burners shut off if that is whats happening.

Start by taking the cover off the burner compartment of the furnace.

Describe in detail the sequence of events that occur when the thermostat is turned up.

And post the model number of the furnace from the rating plate in the burner compartment.

Your initial post is too vague to be of much help in identifying the problem.
