We have an ice build up problem on our outside heat pump unit also. It is only about 3 years old and has done this every winter. The whole unit is covered in ice, and the fan makes a terrible noise as it rotates hitting against the ice. What is causing the ice to build up around the unit and what can we do? We have cut it off becasue of the noise. The air coming out of the vents in the house was warm.

How cold is it outside?

How cold outside? You can test your reversing valve by placing unit to a/c.When you do this you should see some ice buildup melting away.Your heat is probably in the aux heat mode.PDF

last night it was in the high teens, but will rise to upper 30s today. I'll try the a/c idea. Thanks
