I found this snipit in a yahoo search but these forums don't go back quite that far. I think it is the same question I have:
... I have water collecting into a bucket which is coming from the Gas (in my case OIL) Hot Water Base
Board Heating System's Pressure Relief Valve's drain pipe. Can someone tell ...
me the best way to replace / repair it?

look at the pressure gauge, is it building up pressure and then poping off the relief valve?

The relief valve is leaking about 3 gallons per day well below the 30 lbs for which it's rated. The boiler's operating about 15 lbs.

turn off the boiler, turn off all valves leading too and from it, and make sure feed water valve is closed....now open the safety valve and let the pressure drain off... remove the safety after the water stops running from it...replace it with a new safety RATED AT THE SAME BTU RATING AS YOUR BOILER, ...... turn on feed water and let it fill til water flows from lifted safety... open all valves and start boiler...
