I have a Lennox Pulse 21 furnace and want to increase the air flow to my second floor. The fan on the furnace is running at top speed, however, the furnace is borderline undersized for the house. I recently saw an "in-line duct fan" which can be installed in the ducts and supposedly wired back to the furnace fan. Do these really work and how many of these fans can be installed and wired to run simultaneously with the furnace fan? Additionally, does this significantly alter the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire HVAC system.

As many fans as you like. And they do work if the system is sized correctly. Have you tried balancing the system air flow? Have you checked for restrictions in the ductwork? House size and pulse size? If your already undersized, booster fans may not accomplish what your after. Do you have a heating problem on the 2nd floor? or a/c?

The Pulse is 100,000 BTU but is heating 3,700 sq.ft.. I have balanced the system by closing or limiting some of the first floor vents. I know that there are no duct restrictions but the problem continues to be that the second floor runs 5-7 degrees colder than the first floor in winter and vice versa in the summer. Air flow to the second floor has always been modest.

Your talking quite a few booster fans. But I do not beleive it would be an advantageous way to go. Do you have a basement with all the duct work exposed? If so, it would be much better to zone the system and the advantages would be alot less noise, hassled, money, each zone would heat and cool independently using the exsisting heat&a/c.
