Burners won't ignite

We have an '80's GE Ambassador Mark II gas furnace. The pilot light is lit, but burners won't ignite. Checked the A/C to make sure blowers are working, and no problem there. Any help before my kind-of handy hubby starts messing around with GAS connections???

check for 24V at the gas valve with the thermostat calling for heat. Ensure the gas valve is in the on position and not pilot.
