Oil Furnace: DIY yearly maintenance?

Hi,

We have a Ruud forced air oil furnace that is approaching 20 years old. Up until last year we had one of the larger well-known oil delivery companies providing us with fuel oil and sending a guy over once a year for maintenance service.

After doing some checking (instead of just paying their bills) last year we found that they were overcharging us for both the oil and for the maintenance service. So we dropped them.

Although we are saving on the fuel oil, I am concerned about the maintenance. Is cleaning and inspecting an oil furnace something that a homeowner can or should do? If it is, are there any sites or info available where I could get some tips?

Thanks

Many people do their own routine service on oil fired eqipment but very few do it right & even fewer have the eqipment to test the exhaust gas. I suggest you contact a local service company & have them do it. When contacting service companies ask if they perform an electronic combustion analysis. If they don't keep looking.
