old gas furnace-burners wont stay lit

day & night model 100CD-12A series 152 serial# HBGHA 72475
the pilot stays on. we turn up the thermostat, I hear a click, the burners ignite then turn off then back on then off and so on. sometimes when the burners go on there is a small explosion-like kaboom, the flames burst out orange then calm down then burners go off again. there must be a communication problem somewhere in the system. Where do we start?

The most likely thing is that the furnace is overheating and shutting off on the high temperature limit switch until the fan cools it off somewhat. The burners then turn on until it overheats again.

Is the warm air sheet metal hot to the touch? Is the fan switched on and running continuously while the furnace cycles?

we are sorry that it took so long to reply. our heater is working again. we tested the limit switch and it was fine. through this, the bracket holding our pilot and igniter disappeared somewhere. we cleaned out the gas orifice, made a bracket with a 3/4 inch nut, connected all back up and it is worling better than ever. again, thanks.
