Typical problem, I think. The downstairs is cold and the upstairs is too hot, especially at night. Also, the air is way too dry and my unit is in the attic, so, by code, I can't have an installed humidifier. I bought a console-type humidifier. Here are my questions: If I put this humidifier near the air return, will the humidity then be circulated throughout the house? Also, is having the ducts balanced so that more air comes out downstairs expensive or difficult? Obviously, having that change made would cause the reverse problem in the summer and then I'd want it changed back. I looked at the earlier messages and one seemed to suggest running the fan constantly. Is that the answer to my dilemma? The unit seems to be sized properly. In the rooms where the air is comfortable, it feels just right (if dry). I don't have that problem of feeling cold when the heat comes on and the unit does not seem to run too much, even though it is running a lot in this cold snap. I am cold natured and would rather err on the side of warm! Help!

I have an electric heat pump and ice has formed all around it. It has been on the heat pump for about 2 weeks. The heat has been running almost constantly. What causes this formation of ice, and how do I get it removed?. Thanks.
