Strange smell coming from vents/furnace
Hi,
This morning my cousin had turned on our heat for the first time this year and the smell that came from the vents was something I have never experienced before. It smelt like the exhaust fumes of a diesel truck or sort of like kerosene. I immediately shut the heat off worrying about carbon monoxide because at the point I could barely breathe because it was so strong. I know when you usually start up the heat for the first time you usually get that burning smell but it was nothing like this. It woke me up out of a deep sleep. Can anyone explain this? Or have a solution to the problem? Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Call a qualified service company to come out and service the furnace ASAP.
I would take it that you have oil?
You could have heat exchanger failure. You could wake up dead is the old joke.
Dont mess around. For your saftey and others get it serviced.

Yes I have three of them. Thank you. The furnace is working fine now. Before moving into this new place they replaced alot of things in the house so there might have been some stuff in the vents that burned off. It no longer has that diesel fume smell and is working properly. I turned it on full blast and kept the animals outside along with myself and opened all the windows and let it take its course when I returned home that day I posted this. Thanks for all of your help.
