The outside unit should only be part of the air conditioning
unit outside should not be running in the heating cycle, only if set to cool not heat. If both the air conditional and the heat is running at the same time, it would be quite a inefissant(sp) system. I have never heard of a system that would require an outside unit to run while heating. Yes I would definitely suspect a problem. However it may not have nothing to do with the outside unit, but the trigger that switches it on or off, ie... furance control unit, thermostat , or wiring of the therostat, or wiring at the furnace, faulty control unit at the furance, or therostat. You would have to have the wiring diagram of the furance to know how the therostat should be wired in, and how the trigger for the air conditioner works, this diagram may (or may not) be attached to the furance somewhere.

A heat pump never crossed my mind, as I never used one, if that is actually what this person has ??

It still seems strange to me to have a outside compressor running in freezing temperatures ?

But since I don't have experience in using heat pumps, I will assume that you do, and that will survice.

Hey it's PDF again

I know it sounds funny that a compressor runs in the winter and produces heat.I live in Maine.I am the shop superviser.Today at lunch me and the guys sat outside for lunch.Outside temp 39,as you can see all things are relative.A heat pump can produce heat at temps outside that are low.The temps in Maine hover around 0 and during the day low 20's,HEY 39 was a good chance to picnic.PDF

I have relatives in Hanover.Yes ,as I poised the question,25 years ago when I moved to Maine,WHAT THE HELL IS A HEAT PUMP DOING NORTH OF THE MASON/DIXON LINE.We have been slowly been replacing them with alternatives heat sources, much to our customers satisfaction.I worked in Baltimore in the early 70's and heat pumps did just fine.IN MAINE FORGET IT!!!!!!!!PDF
