Trane XR80, blower comes on won't always ignite

I shut it off. Bang on the gas-line. Turn it back on, sometimes it ignites, sometimes it doesn't. So far it has eventually come back on. One day it was set at 66, when I came home temp was 61 in the house. It was blowing hot so it somehow ignited without the banging.

I cleaned everything, checked all the wires. Put a new thermostat in. Sanded the thing that glows and lights it up, sorry don't know the name of it. Cleaned up the temp stick, don't know the name of that either.

Could the gas controls/valve go bad??

Model number TDD100C948F0

Thanks for any help....seriously do not want to call a repairman out.

what we need from you is to call for heat from the thermostat and then list the sequence of events that happens at the furnace in detail. Also while the furnace is not igniting check for a diagnostic flash code viewable through a window on the blower door.
