Magic Chef Forced Air Furnace filter help

Hey all,
First time posting here so please bear with me.
I just bought a house (first-time homeowner! Woo!) and the house has a Magic Chef Forced Air Furnace Model: G66A-75D2C 3.5-6.
The filter in it is dirty as heck (January 2010 written on the side!) and I'd like to replace it. The biggest catch is that the filter is currently sitting at the bottom of the furnace, being held down by two tension rods that don't even hold it very well in the first place.
I've been searching high and low on how this is filter is supposed to be properly installed and have come up empty. I was hoping that maybe some of you guys can share how yours is set up (if they still exist).
My unit sits on top of a cavity that serves as the air return.

I can take some photos of the current filter placement tonight for reference.

Thanks in advance!

you will likely have to make up a sheet metal retaining system for your filter. The rods are likely how it was done with the original installation. Good luck. Pictures are always helpful.
