American Standard Gas Furnace Help

I have an Ameristar (American Standard) gas furnace. The furnace will light up the ignition coil and then will kick off before lighting. I checked the condensate trap and it is clear and replaced the flame sensor - I had a repair man look at it and all of the connections are giving good voltage - does anyone have an idea what could be wrong ? I do not want to replace a 6 year old furnace - any help would be much appreciated

The hot surface ignitor should warm up and glow white hot. The next step that ought to happen is for the main burner gas to turn on. Apparently that is not happening, is that correct?

If so, I'd start by checking to verify that you have gas to the furnace. Do you have other gas appliances that are operating normally?

Check to be sure thaqt the manual shutoff valve at the furnace is in the on position.

Check to be sure that the electric gas valve is turned to the on position.

yes the gas is on stove and hot water heater are working fine) and the switch on the electric gas valve inside the furnace is switched on - when the furnace is running normally the fan turns on the coilds heat up to red hot then the gas flows - right now the fance comes on the coils heat up and then turn off - when the reapair man we here he tinkered with it and got it running but just for the night -$200 dollars later - could it be an electric gas valve or would it be a control panel issue ?

After the hot surface ignitor heats up, the gas should be switched on by the circuit board. So either the circuit board is bad or the gas valve is burned out and needs to be replaced.

You need to use a multimeter to determine whether 24 VAC is being switched on by the circuit board. If it isn't, you need a new circuit board.

ok the repair man said that the electric valve to switch the gas on was getting voltage - so it is porbably the gas valve ? Ok so I will go out and test to voltage to the gas valve - if the gas valve is getting proper coltage then we know it is the valve if it is not getting the right voltage then it is the board - i will let you know in about an hour

If you have gas to the valve and the valve is turned on, then you should have gas to the burners when you have voltage energizing the valve.

If you don't you have a bad valve.

That would be the general rule. There are other things that could happen, such as spiders building a nest in the burner orifices, but that's unlikely in a furnace with multiple orifices.

VAL07732 is the part number for your gas valve.
