Unhappy

We have NO HEAT AND NO A/C WORKING. We recently purchased a home. The home is 3 years old. The previous owners modified the a/c and heating to something we have never seen before. The house orginially had gas furnace/gas heat (STILL DOES). The owners put in a heat pump and condensing unit with heat pump. The thermostat on regular heat turns on heat pump, and emergency heat turns on gas furnace. Yesterday the thermostat would not turn on either, or a/c. Repair man came out and replaced thermostat and it worked for about 3 hours. Then went out again. In the attic there is a cut off switch to work on equipment. Flip the switch and power comes back to thermostat for about a minute and you hear relays on circuit board that controls this wild set up clicking. What do we do? Repair man didn't understand why or how they did this? Who do we call to repair? His suggestion is to pull it all out and completely install new system with furnace and regular a/c. We can not afford to do this at this time. Help. Any web sites you know of that shows this set up or schematics? Help.

You have a very common set-up. A heat pump 1st stage with gas furnace 2nd stage/em heat. It can be set up several different ways. I suggest you call the company back, they missed something. Maybe have them send a more knowledgable service technician.
