Carrier WeatherMaker 8000 runs for a short while, then stops, and repeats.

It's 16 years old. We live in lower mainland BC (Vancouver area).

Apparently this started happening last fall:

The furnace sometimes makes some noise (which I thought was normal - nothing strange) and will run for a short while, stop, and run again.

My dad called someone from, (removed company Name), a Company to come in who said the furnace motor and flame sensor would need to be replaced.

Total cost after tax: ~$4270

I'm no expert, that seems excessively high. I did a search on a company and they have a pretty poor rating - even a news article about their practice.
  • So what do you think about the cost?
  • Would this be something that can be done ourselves (let me know if you need more information)?
  • If you know a reliable company in lower-mainland BC, feel free to suggest it as well.

Edit: ~$4270 to replace the furnace. ~$1000 to replace the motor + sensor, but just a rough estimate from a quick look.

We don't discuss company practices and we don't recommend companies that work in your area in this forum.

Are there no other companies you can turn to for service ?
You would need to get other estimates of the work in order to compare them.

If you leave the model number we can try to help you out on replacement parts.

Cleaning the sensor did the trick! Apparently it was already clean, but my dad had a day off and said he'll take a look and try cleaning it himself. Works now. Thanks!
