Help with central heating

I have a gas central unit. I lit the pilot and then turned the gas to the heater on.
When I lowered the temp on the thermostat, the fan came on along with the fire at the burner. It was on about 5 seconds and all turner off. I turned the fan on manually and lowered the temp. The fire at the burner came on and lasted about 15 seconds and again all turned off. The unit is old but worked ok last year. Can you assist please.

We'll need a make and model number for your furnace.
You may need to remove the front access cover to see the ID plate or decal.
