Siegler floor space heater problem

I have a Siegler floor space heater that I am having trouble with. When I start it up it gives off a smell of gas. All the connections are fine, no leaks. Are there any other parts I can inspect and possibly replace myself? Of course the heater is off now, but I would really like to start using it so I am trying to narrow down the issue and trying to take care of it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Could a clogged burner cause it? It seems to light up fine but the smell is still there.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Luis S.

Welcome to the forums.

Wow....I haven't see one of those around in awhile. They were big in the mid to late 50's.

Is yours a natural gas model with a pilot you have to light ?
Does yours have a thermostat or outside vent ?

Thanks for the welcome, yes it is an old one, but was working great until I tried lighting this year. I need to light the pilot myself and it does not have a thermostat.

Here is a picture of the heater, unfortunately this is the only one I have right now.

How did you determine there were no leaks? Did you use soap solution on fitting?
