Gas Valve on/off switch

Hello, I just moved into a house and in the garage I noticed a gas line attached to a heater. Normally I know that if the valve is running perpendicular to the pipe it's in the of postion. I just wanted to double check.

I flipped the switch both ways I didn't hear any change nor do I smell a difference really... but it might take time to get an ordor.

On right? This is how it was when we moved in,

Off right? I'm assuming this is off... right? Or can a switch like this be installed backwards?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it can, but you might try taking that handle off and see if it can be re-attached in either direction. If your not sure or if you think the previous own er might have done it.
