Trane XL80 Blower Section Noise / Squealing

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Trane XL80 (Model No. TXC049C4HPD0) gas furnace whose blower section recently started getting noisy.

On low speed the blower is silent, but as it raises to higher speed (after the burner has heated up the unit), it softly starts to squeal (sort of like auto brake squeal), and the noise sometimes gets a little louder, then softer, then disappears, the starts again. In other words, it's variable and not really loud---yet.

Questions

1) Does this blower motor and blower bearing accept lubrication?

2) Does this kind of squeal usually emanate from the blower wheel itself, or from the motor?

3) How do I know which piece is faulty?

Thanks!!

Sorry to say I never got any replies. But I can tell you after hiring a repair tech that the motor was in fact bad and it had no oil ports. The motor definitely was hard to turn by hand when the unit was switched off.

The tech also suggested replacing the blower wheel at the same time as the motor. Parts plus labor and trip charge came to about $700. If it gives me a few more years on a 12 year old furnace then I guess it was worth it. Runs great now.
