Trane XE90 cycling, need to clean flame sensor but can't open

Hi, I'm new to the forums. It's pretty humid where I live, getting pretty cold now too. We recently started the furnace back up, and it worked fine last year. Now it is cycling. This seems like an issue with a dirty flame sensor, but I can't for the life of me figure how to get the control access panel open.

I made a video showing the access panel and screws. I tried those screws shown in the video (3 on left, 1 on right) but they didn't help the access panel come out. I don't see any other screws, and the instructions I find for the XE90 say to loosen four screws to open it.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forums.

I was just enjoying that video. The lower door you were trying to remove is the blower access door. You want to remove the one above it.... the finned door. Many times the doors just slide up and then come right off with no screws. Try that.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried yanking both doors up, down and out. they will shift around a little bit, but nothing comes out.

Is it safe to say I should leave the screws alone and try yanking the doors more? I thought I read online that the control access panel is the one with the glass panel you look into... that is on the bottom. But I want to open the top one? It doesn't look like it slides down over the bottom.

Edit: I just tried yanking the top door in all directions again, with a lot of force. It appears to be locked in by the surrounding metal. I can take a video of the top part if that would help, please let me know. Thanks for helping me save the cost and trouble of bringing Sears over.

A video or a picture would be fine.

That looks like a handle on the upper cover under the TRANE badge.
Lift from there.

I keep trying to use that handle to slide or pop out the top panel... it will move around, up down and out a little bit, but won't come out and I can't figure which direction it would come out in. Here are pictures of it. I don't see screws holding it in. Thanks for the help

The top of the top cover slides up behind where I drew the red line. Then the cover should come off. There are no screws holding it on that I'm aware of.

Great, now it's open. To clarify for anyone else, I first needed to pull up while slightly pushing in, and then pull down and out to remove it. I was having a hard time figuring up the up/down in/out thing.

Thanks for your help.

I am wondering if the OP had trouble opening the furnace how filters ever got changed. Does Trane recommend an external filter rack?

Good question Joe.

It looks like the filters are external on this setup.

I got the covers off, but now can't get them back on!

Well, they're kind of on, but they're not terribly secure. One bump, and the lower one is coming off.

Welcome to the forums.

You need to start it up a little higher so that it slides down into the catches.
