LENNOX PILOT LIGHT

WE HAVE AN OLD LENNOX FURNACE 15+ YEARS AND THE PILOT LIGHT WONT STAY LIT. WE HAVE INSTALLED A NEW THERMOCOUPLE, CHANGED THE FILTER AND CLEANED EVERY THING THOROUGHLY. THE PILOT WILL LIGHT AS LONG AS WE HOLD DOWN THE LIGHT PILOT BUTTON ON THE VALVE, HOWEVER IT WILL GO OUT AS SOON AS WE RELEASE THE BUTTON NO MATTER HOW LONG WE HOLD IT DOWN. CAN WE TEST THE GAS VALVE FOR PROPER OPERATION? DOES THE VALVE REQUIRE ELECTRIC TO OPEN AND CLOSE IT OR DOES IT RELY ON GAS PRESSURE?

Does pilot lite flame touch thermocouple when it's lit? If not, clean pilot assembly and thimble. If you've done the above, the valve is bad. The thermocouple creates dc voltage through the heating of the two dissimalar metals in the thermocouple. This voltage is transfered to a coil in the valve, which holds the pilot valve open.

correct. The valve should be replaced. You have received good service from the valve for 15 years and it has cycled many, many times. There is a possibility the magnetic head should be replaced,HOWEVER a valve is a valve and the internal parts after 15 years would dictate replacement.PDF
