HVAC outside unit working when turn heat on
Hi,
I have a Carrier gaz furnace and Carrier AC unit.
I recently discovered that my outside unit was working when my furnace was turning on. I called the Carrier installers and they cannot tell me why until they come to see it and charge me a hefty fee. The unit is heating or cooling great, it is just that the outside unit is not suppose to be working as I do not a heat pump. I called Carrier to confirm that I did not have a heat pump. I tried to just take the outside breaker out, but this caused the metal pipe linking the outside chimney to my furnace to leak water. When I reconnected my outside breaker, the metal pipe no longer leaked. I also put back the outside breaker because I head the condenser working while barbecuing and though it could potentially create other problems. I keep looking on blogs, but my problem doesn't seem to be common.
Does anyone know what is the problem and how I can fix it? Is it the thermometer?
Thanks,
Charles

Welcome to the forums.
You recently discovered this.
How long has it been like that.... and how long ago was it installed ?
The thermostat could cause the problem, especially if it was wired incorrectly or possibly programmed as a heat pump stat instead of a furnace stat.
I'm not sure what's going on with your chimney flue but it isn't right and the breaker controlling the outside condensor should have no effect on that at all.

Hi, we just moved into the house and the system is only 4 years old. I recently change the thermostat myself, but I am pretty sure I did it correctly. I remember making sure I did the same as the past one. I just saw that the blue wire is not connected, is this a problem?

Forgot to say that I checked the back of the thermostat and it is definitely on gas/oil. Maybe I can try the electric/heat pump option.
I am really wondering if there is not a heat pump even if Carrier and the installer said the opposite.

You can post the model number from the outside unit and we can look it up.
If you do have a heatpump and a furnace..... that will require a more elaborate thermostat that can be programmed for dual fuel. You cannot have a heatpump and a furnace running at the same time.
You could also tells us what color wires you have on what terminals.
A make and model number from the old stat would also be helpful.

The model is 24acc624a300, but I called Carrier and they said there was no heat pump.
I have a Honeywell programmable and I have blue (not wired) yellow white green red. Maybe I should jut disconnect the yellow to stop the AC? The old was the same brand, but was not programmable.
Thanks,

Honeywell makes a million models.... all slightly different.
You could try leaving the yellow wire disconnected and see if the outside unit no longer runs.
That would point you in the right direction.
The blue wire may be a C connection for an electronic stat that doesn't have batteries.
Tape it off.... if not in use so it can't short to any wires on the back of the stat.

Hi, I disconnected the yellow wire and the outside unit no longer works. It does temporarily solve my problem, but I would need a long term solution. Does this indicate it is the thermostat? It is new and I would not understand if it was the case.
Thanks,
