Noisy draft inducer motor
Hi,
I have a 5 1/2 year old high efficiency gas furnace.
Here is some info on my AC/Furnace system.
Product: Split System: Air-Cooled Condensing Unit, Coil with Blower
Outdoor Unit Model Number: AL6B036F3
Indoor Unit Model Number: FC/MC/PC43B+TXV
Furnace Model Number: L*9C*B12 (It might be LP9C080C16MP11)
Manufacturer: LUXAIRE BY JOHNSON CONTROLS
Trade/Brand name: ACCLIMATE
I had a maintenance recently and the serviceman noted the motor sounded noisy and whiny. I don't recall exactly what he called the part. It is the big black round plastic thing on the bottom of this picture https://picoolio.net/image/l3g .
He wanted $700 to replace it and I want to first make sure it is worth that much. Can you tell me what this part is called? And also where should i purchase it from? Is it normal for these parts to go bad after 5+ years?
The serviceman said it the whiny noise will get worse over time until it finally fails, so I have some time left. But he said its special order and would take 2+ days to get. So maybe its worth it for me to buy one now and keep it until the other one fails? Then I can decide to fix it myself or pay them to do it. But would storing such an item for a long time (1 year+?) degrade it? And how hard would it be to install it myself?
Thanks

If it needs to be replaced, you generally replace the inducer motor assembly, which includes the motor, fan, and some of the black plastic and might include a gasket or other minor parts that might be needed to complete the job.
Usually the inducer motor assembly can be removed and replaced in a half hour or so.
You can fuse the furnace model number to shop around for the inducer motor assembly and probably buy it for $200-250 or so.
Also, what are YOU noticing? Do you hear the motor whining or some other problem? Sometimes the fan attached to the motor can need cleaning or have other problems which would not require replacement of the inducer motor assembly.

I do hear the whiny noise. Its intermittent but very noticeable. When its not there, you can tell everything sounds normal and good. It might be as easy as cleaning the fan like you mentioned, but I am not sure I am brave enough to do that with winter coming. I may be more brave if I buy one and have it ready to go in case I need to call a professional.
Are you saying that 5-6 years is too short of a lifespan for this part? If I order the inducer motor assembly and fix the issue with cleaning the fan, can I just store the motor until the current one reaches its end of life? Or are these parts best stored in a controlled environment?

With a replacement part you get a one year warranty so if you buy a part and it lays around for a year.... the part will, or should be, still good but you have no warranty if it's got a problem.
I don't recommend lubricating the motor and I'm not in favor of removing the inducer to check it out and then reinstalling it. It's a part critical to the operation of the furnace. It it's getting noisy.... it's going bad.... replace it.
I've seen those motors last from one year to over twenty years. 5-6 years is a shorter than normal lifespan for that part.
