Sorry...don't know the specs on my central A/C unit, but here's the question. Just bought the house, and tried testing the A/C. When I turn the temp down on the thermostat, the unit blower comes on, and the central A/C unit "kick" on, and hums, but the big fan in the unit doesn't turn. It is rather cool outside...only in the 50's, so I don't need the air, just want to know if it works. Thanks so much!

Started the AC for the first time this year. After running 10-20 minutes AC/Fan stopped. Took downstairs thermostat (Hunter digital 5 - 10 year vintage) and put in place of failed Honeywell dial thermostat (17 years old). AC ran fine. Started AC back up that evening running fine then all of a sudden I heard the AC compressor click on and off (like there was a loose connection) a few times, went up to the thermostat and could smell electrical burning. Tried to turn the unit off with the thermostat switch and it would not shut off. Had to disconnect the wires. Put another thermostat (same vintage) in place, worked right off the bat but when I went to turn the unit off (via switch), it kept running and then I immediately started to smell electrical burning again (not until after putting the switch in the off position). What can be short circuiting the thermostat? At first, I thought that the old dial thermostat just had a bad switch but blowing two others makes me wonder, though there was no smell of elecitrical burning at the original failure. When replacing the first thermostat I did accidently touch the wires toghether where they gave a little spark and the fan ran. AC unit is only 4 years old. For what it is worth, I see no physical burning damage to any of the circuit boards.
