AC/Furnace Filter
We purchased a house about a year ago and had a central AC/gas furnace unit installed in Mississippi. I change the filter monthly and noticed the last two months that the filter has turned from white to gray/black during the heater season. This did not happen during the cooling season with AC. I previously have owned electric heat and heat pumps, but do not remember if this happens during the winter. Do I need to have the unit checked or is this normal. Thank you.

Well, accumulating dust and dirt is normal on a filter.
I don;t know exactly what you are seeing, so I can't evaluate whether it's a problem.
Do you burn candles a lot? Candle soot could be an explanation.
What other things in the ambient air of your house could be an explanation?
Laundry chemicals, bleach, drying paint and other chemicals that are allowed to contaminate the air in a house can be drawn past a hot heat exchanger and cause odd odors and other problems.

Thank you for the reply. My wife has been known to burn a candle, but I really just noticed it last month and again this month. The filters were not getting dirty in the summer when the AC was on for extended periods here in Mississippi so I was just surprised to have such dirty filters during the winter. I was wondering if it could be coming from the furnace itself. Should have taken a picture as a reference.
