Bizarre Trane 802 thermostat behavior

... or maybe it's not bizarre, but I need to find out.

Long story short, when I use either Heat or Em Heat, the furnace will kick on when the temp is lower than set. When the temp gets to set, I can hear the thermostat click and the furnace pulses a bit. The furnace shuts off, but the fan continues to run and the thermostat continues to read "Heat On." It will run like this indefinitely. When the temp drops back down, the furnace will kick back in, then repeat this sequence.

If I drop the temp down on the termostat below the current temperature, everything will cut off until the temperature drops below the new setting and then the same pattern will start all over again.

I changed out the temperature limiter switch on the furnace side, but that did not stop this problem from happening.

Any ideas?

Thank you, in advance.

The furnace is stage 2 heat when your thermostat is configured for heat pump operation.

Stage 1 heat is the heat pump (usually found outside).

The Emergency Heat option will only appear when the thermostat is configured for heat pump with Aux heat.

Do you have a heat pump?

Post the model number of the outdoor unit if you don't know.
