Hot surface ignitor question
I've used universal ignitors in the past and need another for my water heater. I've noticed they are available in silicon carbide and silicon nitride versions. Are they completely interchangeable?

The silicon nitride type are rapidly replacing the older style silicon carbide.
I'm not a fan of universal igniters unless I know the specs are exactly the same.
There is one problem that should be noted..... if your appliance uses the igniter to sense the flame.... you CAN NOT replace a carbide type with a nitride due to the composition.

I looked up the Honeywell "Glowfly" HSI that I installed a few weeks ago in my HWH and it's described as a silicon nitride universal replacement igniter. It works fine. Pete is your information wrong or are some "universal" igniters more universal than others?
I Googled the question and could only find one mention that "our" (nitride) igniters won't work on systems where the igniter is used as a flame sensor.
Honeywell's literature for the Glowfly makes no mention other than it replaces over 100 igniters of both types.
