TRANE XR80 Furnace Won't Stay Lit (ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING)

TRANE XR80 Gas Furnace

The small blower turns on. The ignitor glows. The gas valves open and I get flame. They stay burning for maybe 7 or 8 seconds. Then the flames go out RIGHT before the big blower turns on. This flameout is associated with the normal "clicks" from the board.

The blower stays on, the unit cycles but the ignitor never goes orange again, and it won't relight.

I am not getting any faults (light blinks) from the board. I get the fast and slow blinking lights which according to the manual are "Normal" and a Call or No Call for heat.

I've switched the thermostat. It's got a fresh filter. I have checked the flame sensor and cleaned it. I've unplugged the unit for more than 5 minutes.

When I first fired up the furnace, the small blower motor was making quite a bit of high pitched noise, however it seems to be operating normally now.

Even if I'm not getting any faults from the board, could the board still be the problem? I can score one for about 100 bucks.

To add complexity to the problem, it seems like the furnace won't light at all if the covers/panels are installed. Could it be a blocked flue or venting issue? If so... how would I go about checking that/cleaning it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, it could.

Sounds to me lie you have multiple problems and should have a COMPETENT repairman diagnose what's going on.

That would be a better investment at guessing about replacing expensive parts.

Perhaps someone else will have a better idea.

Appreciate the reply... my gut told me it was a venting issue considering it wouldn't light at all when the panels were on.

I removed the inducer and sure enough there was debris from my recent roof job. I cleared the debris... installed the inducer... works like a champ. The debris was creating some type of air flow/vacuum/venting problem.

A "competent" repair man would have bent me over... here's to being mechanically inclined!
