My pilot light comes on but some times the main burner won't come on.

Need more info. Is this a stove, hot water tank, furnace, boiler? How does it act? Pictures might help.

Sounds like an intermittent ignition gas furnace with a dirty pilot orifice.

Need the manufacturer, model and serial numbers of the pilot/flame controller on the furnace to help you.

If, as Pete suspects, it is a furnace with an intermittent pilot, the flame sensor could also be dirty. When the pilot lights, is there a continuing sound of a spark?
