When the furnace is on it smells like something is burning and gets hot

I changed the filters. The code flashed four times I turned the power off and found a switch that has an on and off on it and turned it off then back on. I then turned the power back on it then flashed five times, valve energized with no call for heat, it's still cold in here.

After turning the temp all the way down and switching it off the fan continued to stay on and continued to smell so I shut the breaker off.

It is a Coleman furnace. While you wait on our guys to wake up, take a look at the troubleshooting guide for the Coleman. It may or may not help answer questions. https://www.repairclinic.com/RepairH...roubleshooting

That happened to me a couple years ago. I wish I had a picture of the high-limit switch that stuck and allowed the furnace to overheat. The switch melted and the plastic formed a long drip shape. It was conical...and comical.

This model is one of the ones involved in the Coleman recall for defective/cracked heat exchangers. If it hasn't been checked recently..... it should be. It sounds like it may be damaged.

This shows what happens to the old heat exchanger.

Post #8 identified a cause for concern for your furnace. Has this been checked and verified as ok? Carbon monoxide is deadly.
