Question

My insurance company put in a Goodman central air unit. After 2 1/2 years, it started turning itself off on hot days. Now, another year later, the AC is pretty much worthless. A repairman came out and said there were 2 leaks in the coils and the parts were still under warranty, but he would charge $874 for labor to repair them. He said Goodman units were terrible and he won't even install them and recommended replacing it with a Trane for $4075 rather than fixing it. Another repairman said he will install an Armstrong unit for $2900. What should we do?

Still in Warranty

Hi,

I second PDF on this.Goodman Units do have some problems, but so do Trane and all the others.Goodman has one of the best warranties available and if the service tech contacted them,if he's licensed/certified/insured,he should be getting his "Warranty Pay" from Goodman, not you.

Always remember, first choose the contractor/installer,THEN choose the unit with his/her help.A Qualified Professional Contractor can install a lower-end unit (ALL Manufacturers Have Them)correctly with matching duct work and proper airflow and it will give continous years of troublefree service.Whereas, an UNqualified Contractor can take the best, top unit on the market and it'll never work due to improper installation. The latter has been my observance on most of the problems I have seen with Goodman Units, improper installs.

Hope this helps.Take Care and Best Wishes.

Lapsed Warranty

I appreciate your help guys, but the parts and labor warranty only lasted one year. The parts alone are under warranty for 5 years. The $874 is supposedly for labor alone. The first repairman was pretty much shocked at the shoddy installation work on the Goodman unit. Maybe that's why it didn't even make it to 3 years.

Warranty Out

Hi,

Next up would be the Contractor/Installer who installed to begin with and your Insurance Company if they had it done.It may not help but worth a try if they chose installer, not you and it was installed improperly.

Whatever you decide, remember my other post, research and do your homework.A Professional Contractor will help you decide unit and install it RIGHT and be there if ya ever need them.Take Care and Best Wishes.Once you get all your options laid out, post on here if you would like if you have any questions.Good Luck.

I just finished Installing a 2 1/2 ton Armstrong condensing unit, and a new evaporator coil, and a new line set, total cost $1300, not bad, huh?, Isn't Goodman the same as Janitrol?, and Isn't Janitrol's inferior units?, Armstrongs are almost Identicle to Lennox, are very reliable, and I don't like Tranes because of the way they are built, Usually square, and you have to remove the entire top part to get to the controls and such, well anyways, hope everything works out
