I ordered a HeatnGlo Tierra II gas wood stove (in bronze) and they tried to talk me into buying a hearth for $450 and I thought for that amount of money, I could build my own. Nothing I've ever tried before, as I'm not the most handy person in the world, but hey you only learn by doing, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Went with a ceramic "wood look" tile and decided to do a stacked slate backsplash. I used my military discount at the Home Depot so I came in at $450 for all materials. My wife even got into it, so I was well supervised!
As a DIY home owner, I'm don't have the budget for all the expensive toys. But I did buy a Harbor Freight tile saw which has been performing well for my intended purposes.
I still need to make the wood mantle, its not perfect or professionally done, but here's the damage thus far . . .
