The Heat Is On (sometimes...)

Luxaire
G8D10012UHB11a

After the furnace has been idle for several hours, there is a very good chance (~75%) it will not provide heat when the furnace places an order. What happens when it doesn’t work:
- the thermostat places the order
- the fan starts
- the surface ignitor begins to glow, then goes dark
- the fan continues

The remedy that works 100% of the time:
- turn off the switch on the outside of the furnace
- wait 30-60 seconds
- turn on switch
- furnace works fine until the next long idle period

Any ideas what the problem(s) might be?

There should be a small clear lens in the blower door. Look inside for a blinking LED.
Count the flashes for the trouble code. The codes are on the back of the blower door.

There is indeed a lens, but I have not seen a blinking LED. Will it be there all the time, or just when something isn't working properly?

Remove the blower door. Look at the control board. In the bottom corner you will see the LED. The codes are right on that board. I think it should blink continuously with no call for heat. Opening the blower door lets a safety switch open to disconnect power. You can hold that in to observe operation. Once the switch is released.... the codes are erased.

Thanks, Pete!

I'll eyeball it again and report back ASAP.

I removed the blower door, and located the LED and the codes. The LED was not blinking.

I held in the safety switch, and the LED lit for about one second and stopped.

While continuing to hold in the safety switch, I called for heat. The operation failed to produce heat:
- the fan started
- the surface ignitor began to glow, then went dark
- the fan continues

Does this get us closer to a solution?

Was a code displayed when you were holding in the switch and the unit failed to ignite?

Nope. The LED did nothing.
